The revitalized Balmoral Recreation Centre sits within the established neighborhood of Avondale in Brampton, Ontario. This community asset provides fitness, sports and social amenities to encourage a healthy active lifestyle for its diverse population. The building retains an existing tank and structural elements of the original pool with the addition of a new universal change room, multi-purpose room, double gymnasium and an outdoors splash pad and neighborhood playground. The project is a major contributor to the City’s aquatics, sports and community hub facilities in support of the City’s vision for Density with a Purpose, through its strong connections to the public realm including the network of trails that connect several adjacent neighborhoods and the nearby Balmoral Senior Public School. Conceived as a “pavilion in a park” the building plan focuses on a single central spine with direct views to the adjacent lush landscape. Major program elements such as the pool, gymnasium and lounge areas radiate off of this spine.
