McMaster University, L.R. Wilson Hall for Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences

This building uniquely combines Humanities and Social Sciences for McMaster University in a collaborative learning environment. The program includes a 350-seat concert hall and associated support spaces, a 150-seat black box theatre, a 400-seat lecture theatre, several interactive classrooms of varying sizes, and student research and support spaces. Various specialized research labs are incorporated into the design, including a NeuroVox Lab, a Language Memory and Brain Lab, a Phonetics Lab, a Music Lab, an Eye Tracking Lab, and a Centre for the Study of Language. The design organizes the major public spaces—theatres, active learning classrooms, Indigenous Studies—along two interior streets which intersect at a central courtyard and social meeting space. The building design targeted LEED Gold Certification.
